The Prince William Area Agency on Aging provides the following programs to support Caregivers. To be eligible, there must be a caregiver and a care recipient as defined below in scenario 1 or 2:

1.) Caregiver – An adult family member, or another individual, who is an unpaid provider of in-home and community care to a care recipient who is:

a) An individual, 60 years of age or older, who needs assistance with at least

two activities of daily living (such as bathing, dressing, toileting,

transferring or eating); or

b) An individual, 60 years of age or older, who has a cognitive or mental impairment; or

b) An adult with early onset dementia.

2.) Caregiver – A relative by blood, marriage or adoption, who is 55 years of age and older and an unpaid provider of in-home and community care to a care recipient who is:

a) A child not more than 18 years of age; or

b) An adult, 19 to 59 years of age, who has a severe disability.

• Educational Materials: books and DVDs on topics related to care giving can be ordered and shipped directly to the caregiver.

• Training to Provide Assistance in Activities of Daily Living: the caregiver can receive in-home training from an occupational therapist in how to assist the care recipient complete his or her activities of daily living.

• Equipment: equipment (not covered by any other insurance source) that will benefit the caregiver in attending to the care recipient’s needs can be ordered and shipped directly to the caregiver. Shower chairs, lifts, walkers, wheelchairs.

• Caregiver Conferences: two caregiver conferences are held annually.

• Support Group Information: information about local support groups and in-home aides to provide care so the caregiver can attend.

• Respite Care: for caregivers to persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. A caregiver assessment is required to determine eligibility.
